Water and Sanitation Specialist - Haiti

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a talented professional for the position of Water and Sanitation Specialist. Reporting to the Program Support Services Manager (Haiti Disaster Response), the Water and Sanitation Specialist will play a key role in implementing a number of programs related to Habitat's Haiti Disaster Response efforts. This position is based in Port au Prince, Haiti.

As per Sphere standards, every shelter/housing solution should incorporate access to water and sanitation. This expert will design individual and community WATSAN solutions and make project level recommendations based on site locations. The position will engage with project partners, program managers and field construction personnel to ensure that the solutions are delivered in a safe and efficient process.

The primary responsibilities of the Water and Sanitation Specialist are as follows:

* Oversee and manage the water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (wells/pumps; sanitary latrines/hand-washing points; hygiene education) component of HFHI's Haiti disaster response efforts; many of which will be delivered in cooperation with partner organizations.
* Ensure Water and Sanitation projects are run in accordance with WASH best practices.
* Water quality analysis (supervision of biological and chemical testing).
* Building, protection and/or rehabilitation of wells and waterpoints.
* Latrine construction.
* Devising, organizing and supervising environmental health engineering program (waste disposal, refuse disposal, vector control).
* Coordination with other agencies in technical working groups, data collection and analysis related to Habitat's work.
* Provide technical support for major infrastructure projects in coordination with program stakeholders and the Ministry of Public Works
* Provide technical support on Habitat for Humanity’s related advocacy positions and strategies

 Other duties may include:

* Installing and maintaining hand pumps.
* Design of water networks, spring capping.
* Hydro-geological and geo-physical investigation in view of drilling.
* Borehole drilling and equipment maintenance.
* Reviewing and selecting a suitable bio-sand filter

 

 
Required Skills: 

* Fluency in English; French and/or Creole a plus.
* Bachelor's degree in public health, engineering, community development with strong relevant experience.
* 3 years of progressive overseas program experience, including water/sanitation infrastructure and/or hygiene education programs. 
* Experience implementing water and sanitation programs in developing countries.
* Disaster response experience a plus.
* Knowledge of international water quality and safe sanitation standards and guidance.
* Positive cross-cultural communication skills (language and behavior)
* Prior experience with project/work planning and assessment tools required. 
* Strong communication skills.
